U početku se pretpostavljalo da je šestogodišnje ukrajinsko siroče sa spondiloepifiznom displazijom, retkim poremećajem rasta kostiju koji može dovesti do abnormalnosti skeleta, kao i problema sa sluhom i vidom, Nataliju, usvojio bračni par Kristin i Majkl Barnet 2010. godine. Međutim, srećna porodična dinamika se pogoršala kada su optužbe protiv Natalije izneli Barnetovi koji su tvrdili da je Natalija odrasla osoba koja se maskirala u dete sa namerom da naudi njihovoj porodici.
