Dokumentarac opisuje kako su vlade zapadnih zemalja osmislile propagandu na temelju ideja Sigmunda Freuda, osnivača psihoanalize, koja je promijenila percepciju ljudskog uma i kako on funkcionira. U prvom dijelu spominje se i Edward Bernays, Freudov nećak, koji je prvi upotrijebio psihološke tehnike u odnosima s javnošću. U drugom dijelu, naglasak je na Freudovoj kćeri, Anni, pionirki dječje psihologije, kao i na jednom od glavnih oponenata Freuda, Wilhelmu Reichu.
Uz ove općenite teme, The Century of the Self postavlja pitanja o korijenima i metodama suvremenog konzumerizma, demokracije i komoditeta suvremenog društva. Također propituje način na koji vidimo sami sebe, odnos prema modi i površnost suvremenog čovjeka.
