When a skull is found during building works at Knightsbridge, London, the work is halted in order that a full archaeological dig can proceed. The diggers delve deeper, finding more skulls, but also finding some form of tube-like shell made of a ceramic like material. The Ministry of Defence believe it to be an un-exploded bomb, but when they manage to dig inside the shell, dead insect-like creatures are found. The MOD continue with their story, but Professor Quatermass's theory that the insects are Martians who visited Earth over five million years ago is proved to be correct with drastic consequences.

    Quatermass and the Pit je britanska science-fiction TV-serija koja se originalno emitirala uživo na programu BBC One krajem 1958. i početkom 1959. Predstavljala treću i posljednju BBC-jevu seriju o profesoru Quatermassu, a isti lik će se dvije decenije pojaviti u TV-seriji Quatermass koju je producirala privatna mreža ITV. Kao i kod prethodne dvije serije, autor scenarija za Quatermass and the Pit je bio Nigel Kneale.

    Zaplet serije počinje kada je protagonist profesor Bernard Quatermass izbačen iz Britanske Eksperimentalne Grupe, koju je britanska vlada prepustila vojsci. Quatermass i njegov novi kolega pukovnik Breen postaju upetljani u otkriće neobičnog artefakta na arheološkom lokalitetu Knightsbridge u Londonu. Quatermass i njegovi kolege otkrivaju kako artefakt ima strahovit uticaj na sve osobe koje dođu u dodir s njim. Kako se taj uticaj, kome podlegne i sam Quatermass, širi, tako postaju jasnije implikacije artefakta na dotadašnje spoznaje o prirodi i porijeklu čovječanstva.

    Navodi se kako je serija imala značajan uticaj na opus Stephena Kinga i filmskog režisera Johna Carpentera.
