Uz status jednog od najznačajnijih afričkih filmova svih vremena te nagrade žirija i ekumenskog žirija na filmskom festivalu u Cannesu 1987, časopis Empire uvrstio je 2010. ovu filmsku bajku utemeljenu na drevnoj malijskoj legendi na listu 100 najboljih ostvarenja svjetskoga filma izvan engleskog govornog područja.
