Po istoimenom romanu Henrija Džejmsa, radnja filma je smeštena u svet njujorške aristokratije sredinom 19. veka. Doktor Ostin Sloper je bogati udovac, čija je kćerka jedinica, Ketrin, trapava, povučena i pomalo glupa devojka. Doktor Sloper ima dodatni problem da je prihvati jer mu je voljena žena umrla baš na njenom rođenju. Kada Ketrin zaprosi šarmantni Moris Tauzend, otac odbija da da svoj blagoslov za venčanje, tvrdeći da mladić jedino želi njegov novac. On onda odvodi kćerku na put po Evropi, tokom koga na sve načine pokušava da je odvrati od verenika. Kako ona ipak ostaje dosledna svojim osećanjima, doktor Sloper odlučuje da je izostavi iz nasledstva, pa se po povratku u Njujork Ketrin nalazi u velikoj dilemi, pogotovo što i sama počinje da sumnja u Morisove namere...
