Nakon što završi školovanje u manastiru, mlada aristokratkinja Žan udaje se za lokalnog vikonta, Žulijana de Lamara, koji se ubrzo pokaže kao loš i neveran suprug. Dok pokušava da izađe na kraj sa horničnim preljubama svog muža, pritiskom porodice i okoline, ali i svim radostima i teškoćama majčinstva, Žanine ružičaste iluzije o privilegovanom svetu u kojem živi polako nestaju. Ova sjajna adaptacija romana Gija de Mopasana, u režiji Stefana Brizea, našla se u takmičarskom programu Filmskog festivala u Veneciji i osvojila je nagradu međunarodne federacije filmskih kritičara.
