Biografski film o Franku "Spidu" Weadu i američkoj pomorskoj aviaciji od njenih začetaka do kraja drugog svjetskog rata. Redatelj John Ford bio je dobar prijatelj Franka Weada zbog čega je i odlučio snimiti ovaj film.
Pri samo kraju Prvog svjetskog rata, Frank Wead i njegov prijatelj John Price, pokušavaju dokazati mornarici korisnost morskih aviona. Kako bi to napravio pokuša pokrenuti utrke i testove izdržljivosti. No mnogi se ne slažu sa njim a najoštriji Weadov protivnik je Kapetan Herbert Allen Hazard. Weadova želja za avanturom košta ga obitelji koji se osjećaju sve više otuđeniji od voljenog oca i muža.
