Film je snimljen prema istoimenom povijesnom fantastičnom romanu Sarah Waters. Riječ je o Londonu oko 1940. godine, prije i tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata, gdje upoznajemo različite mlade ljudi koje je spojio rat i od kojih se svaki nosi s nekim svojim demonima.
