Interesting to note that the film was made in 1940, 1 year before America's entry into the European war against Hitler. The movie depicts Germany in 1933. In 1938 the 'night of broken glass' took place. Interesting to note the attitudes portrayed in the film, definitely anti-Nazi.

The Mortal Storm (1940), je jedan od rijetkih antinacističkih filmova
koji su nastali prije japanskog napada na Pearl Harbour, odnosno prije
američkog uključenja u 2 svjetski rat, u kojem režiser Frank Borzage
strastveno i vrlo precizno osudi nacizam.
Radnja filma počne na dan kad Adolf Hitler postane kancelar,
dan koji je slučajno i šezdeseti rodjendan profesora Victora Rotha
(Frank Morgan), omiljenog naučnika na Univerzitetu u južnoj Njemačkoj.
Film pokaže konsolidaciju nacističke Njemačke kroz uništavanje 'nearijskog'
Rotha i njegove obitelji: supruge, dva arijska pastorka koji postanu fanatični
nacisti i prave kćerke Freye (Margaret Sullavan).
Borzage pokaže nacizam kao nekavu ludost, kojoj poklekne mnogo
muškaraca (i u filmu samo jedna žena), kao da se radi o zarazi ali se
ipak kod pojedinaca posljedni tragovi čovječnosti usprotive nacizmu.
Veličanstveni završni prizor nam pokaže tu unutrašnju borbu u liku
kojeg glumi Robert Stak.
'The Mortal Storm' je jedna od velikih ljubavnih priča američkog filma.
Režiserov dirljiv i prefinjen odnos prema odnosu Frey i Martinu, odgovara
njegovoj, u mnogim filmovima iskazanoj vjeri u transcententalnu snagu ljubavi.
