Film je remake istoimenog filma iz 1930. godine. Radnja se događa za vrijeme prvog svjetskog rata na Zapadnom frontu i prikazuje eskadrilu britanskog vojnog zrakoplovstva kako se bori sa njemačkim lovačkim avionima. Protagonisti su piloti suočeni sa sve izglednijom smrću, kao i njihovi pretpostavljeni svjesni da svoje ljude šalju u smrt.
Jedan od poticaja za snimanje 'The Dawn Patrol' je dao Anschluss Austrije, te sa tim vezane bojazni o mogućnosti izbijanja novog svjetskog rata. Scenario filma, slično kao i prethodna verzija, je nastojao iskoristiti pacifističko raspoloženje publike te rat prikazuje kao besmisleno krvoproliće. Danas je ovaj film poznat prije svega po inovativnim tehnikama stvaranja napetosti, odnosno namjernom prekidanju akcionih scena u ključnom trenutku kako bi se njihov ishod tek posredno sugerirao gledateljima.
'The Dawn Patrol' je u velikoj mjeri 'reciklirao' scene leta i zračnih borbi iz prethodne verzije, no danas je najpoznatiji kao jedno od najvećih okupljanja vodećih britanskih glumaca u tadašnjem Hollywoodu, odnosno kao jedan od rijetkih filmova gdje nije bilo ženskih uloga.
