Zatvorska melodrama. Javni tužilac Mark Brady (W. Huston) pred sobom ima slučaj Roberta Grahama (P. Holmes) optuženog za ubojstvo čovjeka koji je uznemiravao njegovu djevojku. Proces završi desetogodišnjom zatvorskom kaznom. U međuvremenu Brady nije uspio u utrci za guvernera pa se stoga prijavio za upravitelja zatvora gdje služe kaznu Graham i mnogi koje je tamo poslao. Kao novi upravitelj pokušat će se sprijateljiti s Grahamom...
