Trideset godina nakon razvoda, Marianne odjednom osjeti potrebu posjetiti bivšeg supruga Johana. Po dolasku u ljetnikovac zatječe njegova sina Henrika i unuku Karin kojoj otac daje glazbene satove iz violončela. Uskoro počinje svjedočiti obiteljskoj drami i nategnutim odnosima između oca i sina koji tuguje za suprugom Annom koja je preminula prije dvije godine.
Izvorno realiziran za televiziju, film je nastavak legendarnih Prizora iz bračnog života (1973) te ujedno i posljednji Bergmanov film.
