Ekranizacija bitke koja se vodila između Sjedinjenih Američkih Država i Japana tokom februara i marta 1945. godine u završnim operacijama na Pacifičkom frontu u Drugom svetskom ratu. Kao rezultat bitke, SAD je stekao kontrolu nad ostrvom Ivo Džima i aerodromima koji su se tamo nalazili. Bitka je čuvena po podizanju američke zastave koje su izveli američki marinci na najvišem planinskom vrhu ostrva.

Narednik u jedinici marinaca, Džon M. Strajker, žilav je i oštar čovek sa još zahtevnijim poslom - pretvoriti
jedinicu novajlija bez imalo borbenog iskustva u ratnu mašinu spremnu za akciju.

On ih tera do same granice izdržljivosti, i mentalno i fizički - gvozdenom disciplinom, mukotrpnim radom,
a ponekad i svojim šakama - zbog čega ga svi mrze, a ponajviše zastavnik Konvej, sin Strajkerovog bivšeg zapovednika.

Uskoro, sav Strajkerov trud i sve što ih je učio dolazi do izražaja u teškoj borbi,
ali najgore tek sledi u jednoj od najžešćih bitki Drugog svetskog rata, osvajanju Ivo Džime.

Ovu snažnu ljudsku dramu o junaštvu i osvajanju, dodatno jačaju i arhivski snimci poznatog podizanja američke zastave na brdu Suribači. izvor: rts
