San Francisco, krajem šezdesetih. Sredovječni ortoped Archie Bollen (George C. Scott) upravo se razvodi od svoje supruge Polo (Shirley Knight) koja se nastavlja brinuti o njihova dva sina. Na jednoj humanitarnoj zabavi, Archieu u naručje baca se mlada Petulia Danner (Julie Christie). Iako je on prvotno odbija, neobična Petulia odluči ga osvojiti pod svaku cijenu. Ona sama, već je 6 mjeseci u braku s bogatim i nasilnim psihopatom Davidom (Richardom Chamberlainom).
