Malom selu po imenu Javé prijeti potop zbog planirane izgradnje brane za hidroelektranu. Da bi spasili selo od nestajanja, mještani odluče dokazati povijesnu vrijednost i značenje svoga mjesta. Budući da je većina njih nepismena, za pomoć morat će se obratiti Antôniu Biái, lokalnome poštaru kojega nitko ne voli jer je svojedobno slao lažna pisma da bi sačuvao svoj posao.
