Zasnovana na istinitim dnevnicima Adel Igo, ovaj film je psihološka drama koja započinje u Halifaksu, Nova Škotska, tokom 1860-ih. Kći proslavljenog francuskog pisca Viktora Igoa, Adel (Izabel Ađani) napustila je roditeljski dom da bi našla svog verenika, engleskog vojnika, Alberta Pinson (Brus Robinson). Pod lažnim imenom zakupljuje sobu u pansionu gospođe Sonders (Silvija Mariot). Pinson ne želi da ima išta s njom, ali ga ona opsesivno prati i špijunira šta radi. Provodeći vreme u sumanutom pisanju dnevnika i pisma, ona upoznaje knjižara (Džozef Blečli), koji se zainteresuje za nju. Njeno ludilo postaje sve veće kada gđa Sonders otkrije njen pravi identitet i kada joj knjižar pokloni najnoviju knjigu njenog oca „Jadnike“. Kada Pinsona prekomanduju na Barbados, Adela ponovo kreće za njim, tone u ludilo i počinje da živi na ulici. Uz pomoć meštanke, Madam Baa (Madam Luiz), Adela se vraća kući svom ocu i ostatak života provodi u Parizu, pišući dnevnik.
