Film prati emocionalni trenutak jedne mlade udovice koja, prisiljena njemačkom okupacijom na Pariz, bježi sa svojom maloljetnom djecom prema jugu. Putem susreće mladog 17-godišnjeg dječarca lutalicu koji ih, zahvaljujući svojoj iznimnoj snalažljivosti i instinktu za preživljavanjem, spašava iz jedne po život opasne situacije. Zajedno nalaze sklonište u napuštenoj, seoskoj kući i odlučuju se pritajiti dok rat malo ne ublaži. Film se temelji na francuskoj noveli Gillesa Perraulta.
