Hélène (María Casares) je bogatašica koju ostavi njen dugogodišnji ljubavnik Jean (Paul Bernard). Radnja prikazuje kako mu priređuje okrutnu osvetu "podmećući" mu lijepu kabaretsku plesačicu Agnès (Elina Labourdette) s kojom će se Jean vjenčati, ne znajući da se djevojka u prošlosti bavila prostitucijom.
Drugi igrani film uglednog Roberta Bressona koji je scenarij napisao zajedno sa Jeanom Cocteauom, kao predložak koristi motive filozofskog romana "Jacques le fataliste et son maître" Denisa Diderota.
