Posle 10 godina robije zbog spektakularne pljačke voza, prekaljeni gangster Gustave (Lino Ventura) beži iz zatvora. U gradu zatiče svoju sestru u procepu između krimosa koji žele njen novac, te Gustave ubija dvojicu gangstera i nastavlja da se skriva, gradeći sebi put bekstva iz zemlje. Na tom putu, prepreke su mu cinični genije - policijski komesar Blot, nedostatak novca za život u senkama i beskrupulozni alavi gangster. No, Gustave dobija priliku za drumski prepad trezor kombija, što mu postaje sjajna prilika da se obezbedi pre nego zauvek nestane iz Francuske. Pljačka prolazi uspešno, no pravi problemi za Gustavea tek tada počinju...
