Posle 10 godina robije zbog spektakularne pljačke voza, prekaljeni gangster Gustave (Lino Ventura) beži iz zatvora. U gradu zatiče svoju sestru u procepu između krimosa koji žele njen novac, te Gustave ubija dvojicu gangstera i nastavlja da se skriva, gradeći sebi put bekstva iz zemlje. Na tom putu, prepreke su mu cinični genije - policijski komesar Blot, nedostatak novca za život u senkama i beskrupulozni alavi gangster. No, Gustave dobija priliku za drumski prepad trezor kombija, što mu postaje sjajna prilika da se obezbedi pre nego zauvek nestane iz Francuske.
