Suočen sa smrtnom pogibelji kojom njegovu narodu preti neprijatelj naoružan nadmoćnijim, metalnim, oružjem, kralj Maja Balam jedini izlaz vidi u egzodusu preko "velike vode" i pronalaženju novoga životnoga prostora. Tako Maje prelaze golemi Meksički zalev i susreću se sa starosediocima, severnoameričkim Indijancima. Zarobivši indijanskoga poglavicu Crnoga Orla, pridošlice su ponovno pred neizvesnim ratom. Krvoproliće potiču i majski sveštenici koji ljudskom žrtvom, uobičajenom u njihovoj religiji, žele umilostiviti bogove. Ni plemenita Iksašel, koja podjednako ceni vrline obojice vođa, svojom neodlučnošću ne pridonosi prijateljstvu dvojice muškaraca. No, Balamova mudrost i Orlova hrabrost približit će njihove narode i spasiti ih od stradanja.
