1890. godine mladi Džek London prekida tadašnji posao i pokušava da promeni profesiju. On potpisuje ugovor za ukrcavanje na brod, takođe pokušavajući da ostvari prosperitetnu i kratku univerzitetsku karijeru, usput se zaljubljujući i ostavljajući mnoge žene. Umesto bogatstva on dobija inspiraciju za pisanje. Uskoro pronalazi atraktivnu ženu koja nije spremna da ga zbog njegove sklonosti avanturama napusti.
