Film je zasnovan na istinitoj priči o Zišeu Brajtbartu, sinu jevrejskog kovača iz Poljske, koji je postao senzacija u Vajmaru i Berlinu, nastupajući kao mitski snagator. Njegov poslodavac Hanusen sanja o ustanovljavanju svemoćne službe za okultizam u Hitlerovoj vladi. Ali kako jača Hitlerova moć i Berlin kipti od antisemitizima, Ziše mora da odluči kako da iskoristi svoju snagu. Muče ga košmari pa prihvata savet lokalnog rabina. Ubeđen je da ga je Bog izabrao da upozori svoj narod na smrtnu opasnost.
