Tokom tridesetih godina prošlog veka, njujorška četvrt Harlem bila je poprište borbi dveju kriminalnih bandi za kontrolu unosnog biznisa ilegalnoga kockanja, drugu najprofitabilniju industriju u to vreme u Njujorku. Jednu je predvodio crnački strateg Bampi Džonson, ranije telohranitelj moćne Stefani St. Kler, a drugu nemilosrdni belac Dač Šulc, pa je njihov sukob imao i rasne implikacije. Iako je zaraćene strane pokušavao da pomiri niko drugi do veliki boss Lali Lućiano, pravi pregovori nikada nisu otpočeli, a sukobi su postajali sve krvaviji.
