Hayat, her father and bedridden grandfather live in a riverside shack near the dangerously dark but breathtakingly beautiful waters of the Bosphorus. Hayat's father owns a small boat that secures the family's survival through a miscellany of not always lawful ventures. Četrnaestogodišnja Hayat, nakon razvoda roditelja, živi sa ocem i djedom u maloj priobalnoj kolibi
u Istambulu. Djed pati od astme, a otac radi kao ribar, no istina je da novac zarađuje nelegalnim
poslovima, za velike brodove krijumčari alkohol, žene i ostale potrebne stvari. Pored teške financijske
situacije, obitelj se prema mladoj Hajat i prema ostalim članovima odnose bezosjećajno i ravnodušno,
sve funkcionira po principu milo za drago. Usprkos svemu, šutljiva Hayat u surovom i nepravednom
svijetu ima jak nagon za preživljavanjem, no da li će iz ovako hladnih odnosa izaći nepovređena.
