Gösta Berlings saga (1924)

Gösta Berling is a young and attractive minister. Because he is an alcoholic and his preaches are far too daring, he is finally defrocked. He leaves the town in disgrace and arrives at countess Marta's manor. His new job there is to be a tutor to countess' beautiful stepdaughter. They eventually fall in love with each other. But they don't know that countess hired him only because she has some secret plans of her own...

Film je adaptacija istoimenog romana nobelovke Selme Lagerlöf.

Radnja je smještena u ruralnu Švedsku početkom 19. vijeka, a protagonist, koga tumači Lars Hanson, je svećenik
koji zbog sklonosti piću i vatrenim nonkonformističkim propovijedima bude raščinjen, te pronalazi utočište na
imanju ekscentrične grofice, gdje će zavoditi lokalne žene.

Film je bio snimljen u dva dijela, koji su se u Švedskoj prikazivali u razmaku od dva dana; za međunarodno
tržište je napravljena skraćena verzija koja se prikazivala u komadu. 'Gösta Berlings saga' je doživjela
izuzetan uspjeh, ne samo u Švedskoj, nego u inozemstvu. Posebno se upečatljivom pokazala Garbo kojoj je to
bio prvi veliki hit, i nakon koga je stekla status filmske zvijezde; i ona, kao i njen mentor Stiller, će na
osnovu ovog filma dobiti pozivnice za Hollywood iz koga se više nisu vratili.
Zbog toga se smatra da je Gösta Berling predstavljao svojevrsni 'labuđi pjev' zlatnog doba švedskog nijemog filma.

Godine 1927. je film dodatno skraćen na verziju koja se dugo vremena smatrala "službenom", odnosno konačnom.
Godine 2006. je američka kompanija Kino International u suradnji sa Švedskim filmskim institutom izdala
restauriranu verziju sa novom muzikom Mattija Byea.
