Glasoviti francuski redatelj Jean-Pierre Melville započeo je karijeru krajem četrdesetih s dva vrlo osobna filma prema poznatim književnim djelima,
"Tišinom mora" (prema djelu Henrija Vercorsa) i "Strašnom djecom" (prema Jeanu Cocteauu).
Nakon melodrame "Kad ti stigne ovo pismo" Melville ne snima tri godine, a kada se vratio filmu snimio je svoj prvi krimić, "Kockar Bob".
