Priča filma se vrti oko prosečne Tajvanske porodice i njihovog života u periodu 1945-1949, kada se završila Japanska okupacija i preuzimanja vlasti od strane Chiang Kai-sheka. Izbijaju konflikti između domaćih Tajvanaca (BenShengRen) i došljaka iz Kine (WaiShengRen), gde Kineske snage pod vođstvom Chiang Kai-sheka politički progone i vrše pokolj domaćih intelektualaca, advokata, studenata. Kineske snage su ubile tada između 28 i 38 hiljada ljudi. Film je inspirisan slikom domaćih intelektualaca, koji daju svoje živote kako bi zaštitili svoj narod, svoje dostojanstvo, i proživljavaju gori teror pod nadolazećim komunizmom, nego što su ga doživljavali pod Japanskom okupacijom.
