Pred sam Drugi svjetski rat Pariz je prepun ilegalnih izbjeglica koji nastoje izbjeći deportaciju. Jedan od njih je i dr. Ravic (C. Boyer), koji pod lažnim imenom ilegalno radi kao liječnik pomažući drugim izbjeglicama. On spašava Joan Madou (I. Bergman) koja se pokuša ubiti nakon smrti ljubavnika...
Film se temelji na romanu iz 1945. godine "Slavoluk pobjede" Ericha Marije Remarquea, koji ga je napisao tijekom svog devetogodišnjeg izgnanstva u SAD-u.
