Britanski prirodoslovac David Attenborough istražuje raznolikost, i u skladu sa Darwinovom teorijom evolucije pripovjeda priče o porijeklu života na Zemlji. Seriju su snimali tri godine i za to vrijeme prekrižarili su Keniju sve do Madagaskara i komoda, američke prerije do Aljaške tundre, amazonske prašume do patagonskih pamp, a snimanje su započeli na Galapagosu.
Događaj koji je najviše utjecao na Attenborougha je bio bliski susret s majkom i mladićima planinskih gorila u Ruandi.
Serija je postavila normativnu osnovu za sve iduće BBC-popularne dokumentarce kao što su Living Planet (1984), Trials of Life (1990) i The Private Life of Plants (1995).
